This could continue *h₂eh₂ǵh- with *h₂i-h₂h₂ǵh-. But if Av. aēzah `desire' belongs there (*Heiǵh-), Mayrhofer EWAia 1, 273, the Greek form cannot be connected. - Toch. A ākāl, B akālk `desire' are now supposed to be Iranian loans. - Szemerényi, Gnomon 43, 1971, 659 proposes that it is indeed from ἀ-εχ-; doubtful. If an IE etym. is unknown, the word might be Pre-Gr. (Chantr. Form. 166: "vocabulaire technique et populaire"; "cette fois encore il semble s'e:tre produit une collision entre un suffixe indo-européen et une finale méditerranéenne"; IE adjectives in - ην, - ηνος are hardly known, ibid.); but the suffix is well-known in Pre-Gr., Fur. 172 n. 118 (cf. ἀτμήν).

Etymology: The above system developed on the basis of an IE starting point independently inside Greek. From the imperatives πῖ-θι and πῶ-θι we can conclude to two athematic root-aorists *ἔ-πῑ-ν and *ἔ-πω-ν; to the latter provides Skt. á-pā-m (with pā-hí = πῶ-θι) an exact agreement: IE *é-peh₃-m. As zero grade was pī- in the plur. at home: IE *é-piH-me, which in Skt. was replaced by full grade á-pā-ma but in Greek πῖθι left a trace; note further OCS 2. a. 3. sg. aor. pi. Further, in Greek the athemat. forms wer replaced by the themat. ἔ-πι-ον with generalized zero grade. The origin of the form piH- is not well known. The shortvocalic subj. of this root-aorist lives on in fut. πί-ο-μαι (like ἔδ-ο-μαι; s. ἔδω); to the aorist still the nasal prsesents πί-ν-ω and πώ-ν-ω; cf. ἔ-δῡ-ν: δύ̄-ν-ω. To *ἔ-πῑ-ν was formed the factitive ἔ-πῑ-σα `I gave to drink' after ἔ-στη-ν: ἔ-στη-σα, ἔ-φῡν: ἔ-φῡ-σα a.o.; to this the reduplicated pres. πι-πί-σκω (cf. δι-δά-σκω: δα-ῆναι, βι-βά-σκω: ἔ-βη-σα: ἔ-βη-ν). The strongly spread zero grade πο- ( πέποται, ἐπόθην, πόσις usw.) is a Greek innovation after δο- ( δέδοται, ἐδόθην, δόσις). The perf. act. πέ-πω-κα agrees with Skt. pa-páu, but can also have been created newly to *ἔ-πω-ν. The nominal stem πῑτ- in πιτεύω is inherited and is found also in Skt. pī-tá- `drunk(en)', pī-ti ́'drinking, drink'. The 2. member in εὔ-πωνος and γακου-πώνης agrees with Skt. pā́-na-m n. `drink'. Meaning: name of a revenging god(dess), orig. perh. the revenging soul of the the murdered man; appellativ. `revenge, curse' (Il.), name of Demeter in Arcadia (Antim., Call., Paus. 8, 25, 6).

Etymology: Uncertain; diff. proposals: to ἔρις, ὀρίνω (Solmsen KZ 42, 230 n. 2), to Skt. ríṣyati `be damaged' (Ehrlich Sprachgesch. 35, Prellwitz KZ 47, 187); to Skt. roṣati, ruṣyati `be unpleasant, be angry' with dissimilation υ-υ to ι-υ (Froehde BB 20, 187f.); cf. Kretschmer Glotta 9, 233. Etym. from Sanskrit are improbable - A connection with the mythical stallion Έρίων ( Άρίων, ΌρίϜων; Bechtel Dial. 1, 349; s. also v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 399f.) requires further demonstration. - On the Erinyes Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1, 100f. - It is to be expected that the name is Pre-Greek. Cf. Herter, Lexis 3(1954)232 and Arena, Helikon 6 (1966)144f. Neumann, Sprache 32 (1986) 43-51 proposes * eri-snh₁-u- `who provokes struggle', from * sneh₁- as in νεῦρον. This would give, however, * eri-san-u- \> * eri-(h)anu-; this could be avoided by assuming that the laryngeal was lost in the compound. But does `provoke struggles' fit? Heubeck, Glotta 64 (1986), who accepts Neumann, answers no; (in fact he says that such a meaning "zwar nicht restlos geschwunden, aber doch... weitgehend zurückgedrängt worden ist", p. 164. The Erinyes have nothing to do with ἔρις, and the proposal cannot be correct; their primary function is to punish. So there is no good IE etymology and the word will be Pre-Greek. (The ending -ῡς would have to be from - uH-s, i.e. - u-h₂- (there is no suffix - uH-_), but Motionsfem. of this type in Greek are not known). I think that the ending is Pre-Greek. Also the variation ν\/νν may represent a palatal (phoneme) n^y (cf. l^y in Α᾽χιλ(λ)εύς; for the phenomenon see Beekes, Pre-Greek B 1).

οὐθείς, οὐθέν, later form for οὐδείς, οὐδέν, found in [dialect] Att. Inscrr. from 378 B.C. onwards along with οὐδείς, which it supersedes entirely from about 325 B.C. to 100 B.C. (forty examples of θ, none of δ) ; οὐθείς is in a majority in Ptolemaic papyri up to about 130 B.C., after which οὐδείς begins to be common, but does not prevail until i A. D.; the evidence of non-[dialect] Att. Inscrr. is in general agreement with the foregoing; codd. of Th., Antipho, And., Lys., and Hdt. never have οὐθείς, but the θ forms are freq. in those of Pl., X., Isoc., D., Hyp., Arist., and Thphr., freq. as variants for the δ forms; also in Hellenistic writers, Teles, Plb., etc.; the frequency of θ forms in the uncials of LXX varies roughly according to the date (known or probable) of the translation of the book in question (though the δ forms are in a large majority in the LXX as a whole); the θ forms are rare in codd. of Str. and later writers.

Derivatives: The fut. ἀλθέξομαι (Aret.) perh. formed after its opposite πυρέξομαι of πυρέσσω (but Chantr. comments: "l'hypothése reste en l'air"; cf. συναλθάσσομαι; ἄλθεξις. On these forms Van Brock, Vocab. médical 198 - 207 ("capricieuses formations", all late). ἀλθεστήρια `medicine' (Nic.), cf. χαριστήρια, etc. (Chantr. Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [26] * h₂el- `grow'

Etymology: Άλθαίνω is connected with the root in ἄναλτος (q.v.) (Schwyzer 703 β). Cf. ἀλδαίνω. Chantr. notes that the word is originally used of the growth of damaged tissue; he translates ἄλθετο χείρ with "le bras se guérit". - However, the meaning `heal' is not evidently connected with ἀλ- `grow, feed'; the glosses give systematically the meaning `heal' etc.; θεραπεία means also `medical or surgical treatment'; θερμασία is less clear (false reading?); αὔξει also deviates (is it for ἀλδαίνω?). - The name Ἄλθηπ\/ φος is clearly Pre-Greek (cf. the river Αἴσηπος); so may be Άλθαία (the suffix - αια, - εια is also known in Pre-Greek); but we cannot be sure that the names belong to the verb. - An alternative etymology connects Skt. r̥dhnóti `obtain luckily', Rix MSS 27 (1970) 88 and Mayrhofer EWAia 1, 118.
